Though Tristar Music did have the W prefix on their releases, they weren't the first CBS/Sony company to use it. In the early-to-mid '80s, CBS (Sony's parent company) did the W-prefix on a lot of labels that they had begun to distribute autonomously. Some didn't last long. The second noted attempt of the W-code was for "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" by Public Enemy when Def Jam was handled by Columbia.
