New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) is the fifth studio album by Scottish band Simple Minds, released 1982 on Monday, September 13th in the UK.
It charted for 53 weeks on the UK Album Chart and peaked at #3.
Although the US edition of the album has 1982 copyrights, it debuted on LP & cassette in January 1983, and on CD in mid-1987.
The US edition of the album replaces the title track with a shorter, unique mix with slightly different intro synths and widely panned drum fills. The 2016 deluxe reissue calls this the 7" Mix, and it may be the same as what was released on a 45 in Italy. This mix is essentially an edit, with slightly less reverb, of the untitled long remix which was released on an Italian 12". That long mix was also on the original UK/EU CD release (PolyGram W. pressing) of the album and is sometimes called the German 12" Mix or German 12" Remix.

5th studio album from the Scottish synth pop/new wave band. This USA release is pressed on gold/cranberry swirled vinyl.
Audio is clean, well tracked and mixed. Good sound stage.
Highliights are "Promised You A Miracle" and "Big Sleep". Catchy bass hooks and layers of dreamy, glistening instruments, including kit drums and extra percussion. Vocals are solid.

“Big Sleep” gets me every time. This record is phenomenal from start to finish. Sound quality is huge. Just a perfect record from one of my favorite bands ever. -

Edited 3 months agoFantastic release. However, can anyone comment on the print quality of the sleeve?
It seems to me that some of the writings look blurry. Like the track listing and credits on the back and the little ‘simple minds’ on the top left corner of the front. Perhaps the original er of the scans of this issue could share them here in full resolution, to check. Thank you.
The slipcase on the other hand looks fine. -

Curiously, there are two different US cuts of this album. There's this Frank DeLuna cut, and one by "SL" (https://discogs.futbolgratis.org/release/5389314-Simple-Minds-New-Gold-Dream-81-82-83-84)
I own the SL cut and a UK original -- they sound identical to me. So I just wonder what this cut sounds like. -
Edited 3 months agoReally enjoyed the DTS-MA 5.1 2024 mix of this album. Listened to the orignal for decades, this new surround mix was faithful as much as possible to the original stereo withough pulling apart the threads that made the album great in the first place.
Very happy with this one, great job
Still makes me laugh that the sleeve has a mistake on it - QA and QC are still second rate when it comes to this stuff -
Edited 3 months agoThe EQ flat transfer of the original studio stereo mix and the new 2024 stereo mix sound fantastic and are gloriously dynamic.
The 2024 mix is different from the original but so was the 2005 mix which was more compressed and louder.
The choice between the original mix and 2024 mix here is a difficult one, I like both, but they are both better than the 2005 mix. -

This doesn't sound as good as the 2002 CD remaster. While the CD is louder, there's more sonic clarity compared to this quieter SACD, which is surprisingly muddy. Avoid.

Seems to be a good mastering and could sound good but constant background noise with the gold vinyl is problematic with headphones...it does not overpower the music but there between tracks and some quieter ages
