These are the moments that make being a Morrissey fan so difficult - the flashes of pure brilliance that prove the man can still do it. Does it make you overjoyed that the thing you love has crawled out of hibernation to surprise you once again? Or does it just annoy you, feeling that if a song like "Jacky..." *can* be done, why then is it not done more often?
Regardless, the finest moment on the whole of "Low in High School" makes for a fantastic single. Delivered on a catchy, chugging melody, the hilarious lyrics take stabs at a ionate thespian made amateur by heartbreak, and whose unintentional dispersal of her despairing audience has been interpreted (by some), as a thinly-veiled reference to Brexit. It's got all the Morrissey hallmarks, from conceited main character to dryly intoned internal rhymes, and made greater by the fierce, minor-key throb of the instrumentation. As the hyperbolic outro horns combust, I feel an immediate compulsion to spin the disc again - for a track running 4:19, that's quite unusual.
The B-side is a live cover of Elvis Presley's "You'll Be Gone", whose exotic Hispanic flavours make a perfect postmodern partner to Morrissey's grouchy, middle-aged growl. Sadly, the recording isn't all too impressive - a combination of the muddy mix, burying Moz's vocals, and the ever-so-slightly flat performance make this a live moment that - whilst undeniably fun - was probably best experienced ephemerally, in person.
