2012 is absolutely a typo. Unless this typo appears printed in this version, it should be changed. I would imagine this should be 2002. I have the Dirtnap reissue and it states © 2002 but no month is given. -
This is simply one of the greatest power-pop/pop-punk albums of all time. A top 20 all-time album for me, easily. Listening to it now, 14 years later, it's remarkable how my knowledge of their untimely demise does almost NOTHING to dampen the sheer joy and exuberance of this album.
They wrote and recorded some of the most perfect pop songs I've ever heard. Their music is surprisingly multifaceted for a band that generally projected a bad-boy-whatever attitude. It's garage, it's punk, it's power-pop, it's rock & roll-- it's everything you love about guitar music rolled into a flawless and irresistible 28 minutes.
The replay value of this album is astounding: I've loved it since I was 15 years old, and plenty of bands have come and gone since then. The Exploding Hearts and "Guitar Romantic" have remained, and it's still one of my go-to records for any setting. Drinking, smoking, driving, sitting around, and of course, sniffing glue all go perfectly with "Guitar Romantic."
We were robbed of a once-in-a-generation talent, and it's a monumental tragedy that these dudes met their end before they could even reach their prime. The album therefore carries an unavoidable tinge of bittersweetness to it. "Guitar Romantic" will always have a special spot in my record collection and (as unbelievably corny as it sounds) my currently exploding heart.
