Virtual perfection
Would listen on repeat all day.
Same press as the 85th Blue Note version but cheaper. -
The record sounds and plays well. I didn't know a huge amount about Herbie Hancock before I bought this. I was probably aware of Watermelon Man or much later interpretations of Watermelon Man maybe because I think the original or early versions are something of a far cry from what I'm familiar with. Anyway, I might be wrong or right on that not sure. The point is, for this little review, I was just expecting this record to be a lot more melodic than it is and every time I put it on I just can't stop myself from thinking that it's more infernal tootling than enjoyable jazz. Not doubt there's a zillion shades of jazz and I'm not stuck in any preconceived picture of what jazz is or should be. I just expected a more melodic experience. I do enjoy this record and I enjoy the music. But that term...it always winds its way into my brain when this is on...infernal tootling. Still, as far as infernal tootling goes it's...excellent.

First one I received was a dud. Lots of non filler and floor noise. I returned it and picked up a second copy. This one is incredible! Dead silent, no non filler and the mix sounds perfect.

Wonderful sounding, amazing album. The remaster is excellent as always in this series.
Freddie Hubbard is on fire here. -
Excellent sonics on this pressing, really breathes and you can feel the dynamic work of Tony Williams on the drums, and great horn attack, A real bargain

Edited 2 years agoFourth copy purchased from Amazon.ca in October 2022. Purchased a copy on the initial release date in September 2021 and each subsequent copy came with the same non infill issue on A3, a repeating zip sizzle for the final minute. I’m not sure why I get all these loser pressings?
**UPDATE NOV 8, 2022**
Finally fifth copy is a keeper! Glad that search is over! On to the next... -
Essential jazz record. This reissue is flat, dead quite and sounds fantastic. For 22 Euros is a no brainer really. Grab it while you can!
