This is just a fantastic album - an underappreciated classic that deserves to be mentioned with the very best of early 80s R&B. Excellent writing, musicianship, vocals, engineering... really, the only flaw in my book is the cover. Doesn't look at all how the record sounds, and I imagine is a big reason why this LP doesn't have more cachet.

Still no standalone CD release for this masterpiece? (and don't point me to the two-fer UK issue that also has their debut album--I want a single, standalone cd release)

3/4 of the album are so groovy, so boogie, so... NICE !!!!
"Secret rendez vous" is one of my best groovy song. -

Love the hits on this album, but for me the deep cut here is the dreamy slow boogie of "Wanna Be Close To You."

Edited 3 years agoTogether, René Moore and Angela Winbush were unquestionably one of the premier duos in R&B history. Pairing Winbush's soaring, gospel-honed voice and musical talents with Moore's delicate harmonic flair was a delight that kept giving. 1981's Wall to Wall was their second outing for Capitol Records (and their second album overall). Greatly steeped in the stylized electro-funk and boogie modes that raged in Black music at the onset of the 1980s, Wall to Wall lays on thick bass and synth-heavy grooves against the duo's trademark intimate evergreens of sincerity and grace that made listeners believe that the duo's rapport was more than musical. This album is full of monster highlights, including the rapturous "I Love You More," which boasts a CHIC-influenced chant in the chorus and an undulating, slamming synth bass groove that may have made Parliament-Funkadelic keyboard whiz, Bernie Worrell blush. The ultra-supple "Imaginary Playmates" is the ultimate quiet storm euphoria with Winbush and Moore alternating gorgeous lead vocals while dreamy Moog synths float and swirl smoothly across the melody. A stone-cold gem of quality early '80s R&B from one of the best to ever put their touch on it.
Of course, my 1981 Capitol-Winchester pressing sounds fabulous. Great dynamics and pure low-end goodness all-around. Thank God for the late great Bruce Swedien. -
Mixed by Bruce Swedien, RIP! I don't know why he was left off of the credits on here when it's on back of the LP plain as day...

I loved this band but even though here in the UK Secret Rendezvous was such a big track i never understood why this album is considered their best.
