This Pet Shop Boys single, in particular, shows that Chris Lowe & Neal Tennant understood that the best dance music (of any variety) combines immense energy and a lethal groove in counterpoint to a strain of minor-key melancholy. Keeping the two balanced is what made unforgettable NY disco, Italo disco, house, and, of course, New Order. The pathos of "Opportunities..." was completely lost on the US of the mid-1980s, when the Reagan era mandated materialism and individualism of the "my material needs outweigh you and your life". The fact that this beautiful song is about two desperate people living with the ghost of strangled opportunities was never fully absorbed. One of the greatest pop and dance music records ever made.
