Sufjan Stevens – The Age Of Adz

Hi, why the 2023 repress is stated as the same as the first 2010 press? I mean, 13 years after... I think there must be different discogs pages, don't you?

Sounds amazing and great gatefold packaging, happy to finally snag this from the 2023 repress. The artwork is super cool; I never owned the CD in the past so I wasn't aware that there were all these other pictures of different big mythology-looking dudes like the one from the cover. Also very happy that each side has a good chunk of ~20 minutes of audio, not like a lot of releases now where each side has like 3 4-minute songs, if that. Having Impossible Soul on one full side is awesome, although the acoustic ending is strangely on the end of side C, but I guess it still works.

I bought my copy in 2010 at his show when he performed in my hometown. It was an amazing performance (he was touring for AOA). The crowd was engaging - I it very distinctively. I was 14 or 15. Just getting into music. All of a sudden, I hear his work and think, "Ok, this is tangible. I can attach myself to this for a while." I went to the merch table at intermission and bought the copy that I have playing on my table right now. Flash forward, 10 years and I'm still listening to this music and trying to understand what it was that night that sent me into such a wonderfully foreign place. If there was one record I would say to own, it would be Age of Adz or Enjoy Your Rabbit/All Delighted People EP. They are highly accessible works, in of purchasing power. EYR isn't the world's greatest piece of music, but it does have remnants of what he assembled into ILLINOISE and MICHIGAN. ADP is what I think he did for other people, which would explain its directness. I don't own a copy or I'd review that. Anyway, my copy is sonically very quiet. I've kept really good care of the vinyl, though. It's a double LP, but worth it for the songs. They wouldn't fit on one LP. Peace ~ Nick.

I reached out to Asthmatic Kitty because of surface noise and poor quality of the sides C+D lp. Basically the same issues other people are having. They were super nice and offered to send a replacement but also said a repress of this album is in the works. Just a heads up to anyone thinking of picking this up to hold off and be on the lookout for the reissue that I'm sure will be much better quality.

Mine has a skip on "Impossible Soul," but in the most inadvertently perfect way: it's at the VERY end, and loops Sufjan saying "so impossible / so impossible / so impossible / so impossible." Thus, I now have access to FOUR equally excellent endings. Here they are, in order from saddest to happiest:

1) Vinyl (my defective edition): looping "so impossible" into infinity and beyond
2) Vinyl (standard edition): fading out on the desolate drone
3) Digital: the melancholy solace of "pleasure principle"
4) Live: the jump cut to "Chicago." All things grow! All things grow!

Very pleased with this - it's like a "choose your own adventure" book.

The mastering sounds pretty good, but the manufacturing quality is lacking. I had to enlarge the spindle hole on one disc, and both have a fairly persistent non-fill (ripping paper-ish sound). It’s a busy, dense album sound wise so the defects mostly get buried behind the music, but in quiet ages it is very annoying.

I've gotten two copies now from Amazon and I had to return both, because the holes on both disc would not fit over spindle. Has anyone else had this problem? It's a standard spindle and all my other records are no problem.

My first copy sounds terrible. Lot of distortions and surface noise, especially on sides A and C. I ed Asthmatic Kitty and they send me replacement discs and they sound fantastic. No distortions and noise. Distorted discs have more green label and new ones are more blue. So if you record sounds terrible check the label colour, maybe it was faulty series.
