My sister flew into town and brought her 3 copies, together between us and another friend of mine we had each of the 8 pressings of this album on vinyl and spent some time over the next few evenings shooting them out with three different styluses and a couple different preamps. We also ripped Candy Necklace from each copy as lossless flac files which were then loaded into our DAW (Adobe Audition) and sync'd up in the multitracker so we could toggle between the 8 different rips of Candy Necklace from each of the 8 different pressings on hand, as well as have a visual manifestation of the waveforms.
We were unanimous in finding this version's soundstage superior, absolute silence in the deadwax, no stereo image interference, a rather impressive job on this particular pressing. Speculative, but it's possible this version of Candy Necklace stood out above the others thanks to the omission of Judah Smith Interlude, which reduces the playtime on side B of this particular pressing down to 15:05 (compared to 19:41 on side B for the other 7 pressings which include the Judah Interlude). At 15:05, the runtime on side B doesn't exceed the 17:43 shelving limitation where groove density begins to compromise and affect both volume and bass dynamics as well elevate the noise floor and artifact density instances.
My only regret is I wish I'd ordered a backup as I didn't realize these were so expensive now. I really enjoy this album. It's no Ultraviolence or Born to Die but it's an impressive return to form after BB and COTCC, two records that don't do much for me. This album has an adventurous and ambitious quality that somewhat feels like the sister album to Lust for Life, spanning a wide range of moods and atmosphere. Definitely one my favorite albums of hers. -
The best alternate cover, the best sounding pressing. Just wish it had a cooler gatefold, maybe a black and white version of the target gatefold? I just think there’s so much more they could’ve done for a such a sick alternate cover. The center lables being colored totally throws off the whole b&w vibe going on. It would’ve been the perfect milky clear pressing… especially because of that cover 😍😍😍

Her most beautiful cover ever… so intense, fragile, delicate. This is THE alternative cover for DYKTTATUOB
-
This is not a good pressing. Crackles and noise throughout. A lot of distortion on B3 as well. Only worth for the cover.
-
Pressing for this is perfect *for me* - quiet, lots of negative space, minimal crackles (much less than two of the other variants I've heard). It suits the brooding reflection really nicely, but won't be for you if you prefer more bombast and energy. As an aside avoid the green pressing if you can, really hideous, like it misinterprets the album's strengths and has basic errors (cracking, noise saturation) as well. Hope this helps someone and hopefully the inflated prices come back to normalcy!
-
This is my favorite variant/pressing off this album. Got no complaints about pops/cracks (compared to my white variant copy), especially on the silent parts of a song. Glad that I picked a copy of this when it was up for sale at Lana's shop.

Edited one year agoSounds incredible. The cover art is so stunning. One of my favs in my collection.
-
Edited one year agoSides A and B are the noisiest for me. There are crackles throughout, and A&W suffers from some kind of strange distortion near the end of the track. All the tracks are still listenable, but it's annoying that a new vinyl like this would be so poorly pressed. Sides C and D have almost no noise, so that's a plus! Despite the vinyl quality, it's a truly fantastic album. Lana really outdid herself. And of course, the album cover rules!
-
I have all 6 editions of this album on vinyl (white, two Black editions, pink-purple, green and red). Compared by sound. For me, the best sound is in white and pink-purple, they are the cleanest, without unfilled places, without noise. The noisiest are the two black vinyls editions - Like wood in a fireplace. Green and red vinyls have a lot of unfilled places, this can be clearly heard between tracks. I recommend white vinyl and pink-purple vinyl (from Amazon Exclusive) to Your collection. You will enjoy from listening these two vinyls editions.
