Edited 9 months agoMatrix / Runout (Variant 36): 824 499-2 07 [RO, etched]
BUYER BEWARE: My copy of this release has started to pinhole, as have quite a few West German
releases that were manufactured in the mid to late 1980's.
There are articles, on-line, that have been written about this problem.
My advice is to rip your copy of this release asap, before the pinholes increase & become problematic
during playback of the CD. -
Highly recommended !

Have to weigh in and this as being a must own version of this iconic album. This may have half the level output of the sacd version I own but it has twice the detail and dynamic range. I scratch my head as to why their is so much disdain toward the compact disc format. From vinyl fans and the conglomerates alike, and yet it reinvented a stale music industry, revolutioized all aspects of the consumer experience, and provided the necessary, significantly better sound, as this CD clearly demonstrates.

My copy has the Variant 3 matrix described for this release, (Matrix / Runout (Variant 3): 824 499-2 12 #) but text on credits reads 'Mastered by - John Dent at the Sound Clinic, London.'
Assuming this is not the Bob Ludwig master but all other info on this page describes my CD. Any thoughts? -
Edited 7 years agoOnce more, shout out to the original CD. I have to do these things because the reviewed discs sound so amazing - seriously, you can't have a better demonstration disc for your system at this price (except maybe an early "Communique").
And the music doesn't need any more praise either - to me, this was Dire Straits at their absolute peak with a great variety of songs and purely beautiful guitar playing this is a must for any music lover (who can stand that digital 80s sound - it can be a bit strange at first)
