I'm just starting to listen to these - couple opportunities missed: first is they haven't removed the unintended nuisance buzz from early in Alchemy's Local Hero; second to not have a Brothers In Arms concert is a travesty - e.g., give us an official Syney 1986-04-26 or similar - the energy on those is just a step higher than the Every Street concert, where Mark's vocals seem less enthused on the old numbers.

Edited one year agoThis is a near faultless set (mastering, presentation, unreleased material - "I Think I Love You Too Much" is immense), and the few flaws there are won't make me deduct a point although I should point them out so they're all in one place:
- "Portobello Belle" is a good addition, but Guy Fletcher's decision to cut the ending because he thought it wasn't going anywhere is a headscratcher... not so much because I necessarily need "everything", but because it segued into "Tunnel of Love" and that segue sounds rather awkward now ( that quite a bit of what sounds like the "Tunnel of Love" intro on the original album was actually part of the coda of "Portobello Belle").
- "The Rocks and the Thunder" is missing from the intro of "Going Home", as it was on the original LP, but not the CD. Less than a minute, but annoying.
- Similarly, "Telegraph Road" has lost a part of its intro.
- "Solid Rock" and "Telegraph Road" swapping places takes some getting used to
- "On Every Street" and "You and Your Friend" also got switched around, but that bugs me less
- Speaking of which, "The Bug" really belongs in the On the Night tracklist to break up the rather dirgey "Romeo and Juliet"/"Private Investigations" stretch, and I would've liked to see the other two tracks from Encores appended to the end of the second OTN disc. But I can understand why, from a historical standpoint, they wanted to keep Encores intact
- "Tunnel of Love" from the BBC disc has never been the Old Grey Whistle Test performance but comes from a German TV recording done in Dortmund. However, even I only recently learned about this.
- Nothing from the Making Movies/On Location and Brothers in Arms tours (possibly not available in multitrack)
- No "Planet of New Orleans" (definitely not available in multitrack according to Guy) -
Edited one year agoI got this today. Very nice package. Rainbow has a lot of reverb on the guitar and the vocal seems a bit distant and Mark growls a lot in a lazy Dylan fashion! Alchemy sounds great and warm but I’m sure I hear new details in the mix. Industrial Disease sounds rushed and goes at a fair old clip!
I can see why it was omitted from the original cut back in 1984. It was the final concert of the Love Over Gold tour so it was a race to the finish! The version of Portobello Belle here isn’t the one on the 1988 Money For Nothing compilation, it sounds slightly different. Must be from another show. Telegraph Road and Solid Rock have swapped places on this edition too.
On The Night sounds full and very slick and balanced but Sultans sounds like a club gig and a bit muffled compared to the originally released tracks.
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits in Dublin in late August 1991 on this tour. They didn’t play Telegraph Road unfortunately but at least it’s here now.
At least you get a booklet but the essay is brief and doesn’t get into too much detail.
Still it’s a nice addition to the studio and Knopfler solo sets. -
Edited one year agoThe streaming version of Alchemy sounds great - I was afraid the digital versions would be compressed to death, but that is not at all the case - but I'm really disappointed that Portobello Belle still seems to be missing a part of the instrumental section in the middle.
