This thing sounds glorious. Silent, crisp pure and alive. Mono is the way.

I recently picked up Japanese mono pressings of MEET THE BEATLES, SECOND ALBUM, and BEATLES NO. 5, a Japan-only release. Together, they contain all the material from the first two British albums (PLEASE PLEASE ME, WITH THE BEATLES) along with all the single/EP tracks of the era (tracks 1-15 on PAST MASTERS) with the exception of "I'll Get You". This pressing sounds really good - vivid, clear, crisp, robust, punchy, just a very 'alive' sounding slab of wax. It also sounds like they used the Capitol tapes, because I'm hearing that good ol' reverb I haven't heard in decades. That's slightly sarcastic, but to my ears, it still beats the 'grand canyon' effect of the early stereo Beatles releases, with all the instruments in one channel and the vocals in the other, and a huge empty space in the middle. My copy plays like a champ, I didn't notice any surface noise at all.
