Edited 12 years agoThe album has some decent cut tracks like "Hurts Like Heaven", "Charlie Brown", "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall", "Up With The Birds". Majority of the other tracks sound like stuff you'd be listening mainstream singers sing. Paradise tries to emulate Viva La Vida, but in an over-produced manner. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall pulls sound from the previous album. Princess of China has a good beat and chorus, but suffers from all the sounds and noises.
I seriously don't understand why Champion plays some complex beats on some songs and then is forced to play a simple beat like Up In Flames. A shame. Good drummers need not be drowned out by pop music. It IS nice to see a band change direction, but not in such a footloose manner. What happened the interesting sound of X&Y? Gone. A Rush of Blood To The Head? It's sort of there, but still gone. Parachutes? Blown out of the water.
The main problem here is influence. If the band considered Brian Eno as one of the crew, then I better jump ship now. The three interludes are interludes of his design, not something the band would come up with. Charlie Brown and Don't Let It Break Your Heart sound too much like The Killers' more recent stuff, pieces of Major Minus remind me of Muse, and Up In Flames is oh-dear-God. UFO and Us Against The World have some hints back at Parachutes and A Message, but Chris' singing is half-hearted on them.
The only songs reminding me of the previous albums and Coldplay overall are Up With The Birds, UFO and Us Against The World, even though they do so remotely. Another major issue with the album has been noted by others... THE SOUND, it is ALL over the place!! They paste this as a concept album yet the sound is disorganized in an ungodly manner. If they didn't have that issue, it would've sounded better. But I guess the sound is representative in the album art.
Call me disgruntled, but the usual three year wait this time around was not worth it. I will not be seeing this live, though I saw Viva La Vida live. If they continue this path I will no longer buy their albums. Hopefully, as Chris Martin stated, that acoustic album comes out soon. -
