REDEFINING THEIR SOUND - again - with an emphasis on production this time out - WILCO still remain revivalists. Rummaging thru pop music's backyard, picking up scraps of this or that, luring the listener out of the past with familiar melodies or vocal hooks; amounts to a sound where almost all the tunes click for a moment - then fade away well before materialization. Matter of fact they all grab and let go (with the possible exception of the last song listed: "In a future age"). Tweedy still writes his cleverness into chorus and verse on almost all 17 of these songs; so it's not lyrical bankruptcy - it's the drive towards the classic formula ala Beatles/Beach Boys that regale songs like the sickeningly up-tempo "Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)" or the Ooo, Ooo, Ooo of "Pieholden suite" or the Ooo, ooo, Ahh, ahh of the title track that repulse me etc. Yeah, so some people are happy that they "ditched" the mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel, banjo and resonator guitar (exit Max Johnson) (isn't that pedal steel on "ELT?") But not I. The tiring "My Darling" sounds like a lost track from PINK FLOYD's Atom Heart Mother. Almost everything "sounds like something else" (isn't that Neil Young's guitar on "Via Chicago"?) Nothing on summerteeth quite sinks in. I've heard that Jeff Tweedy has a huge record collection, so who knows where the next record will take them. I just can't help in thinking that maybe he shouldn't have given Jay's records back.
