SOUND : 2,5/5
Although it had a very simple production, and was recorded with low-cost instruments, the Cure's first album sounds realyy well balanced on its first orginal CD editions. So, as you may have guessed, this remaster adds nothing but loudness wars. As for the rarities, being mostly old demos end live tracks recorded by a bunch of unknown kids with very limited ressources, they sound better than expected.
BONUS TRACKS : 4/5
Usually, The Cure's deluxe editions are a bit disappointing on this side because most of the interesting stuff is in the " the dots" box-set. Well, not this time! 8 songs out of 20 were brand new to my ears. Some of them date back to the very beginning, when The Cure was a 4-pièce called Easy Cure, with Porl already onboard. Talking about historical value! And guess what... Most are actually good songs! Even live tracks and a few demos of well-known songs are interesting. For example, you can really feel Robert's despair when he was recording this early and very quiet demo of 10:15, alone at home. Then, 2 years later the band turns this very sad song into a live punk masterpiece (never heard it played so fast, and it rocks!). Plus, we get the additional songs featured on the Boys don't cry album, with the exception of "Killing an Arab". The B-sides found on " the Dots" are also missing, as always, but what is there is more than enough to satisfy the fan.
PACKAGING : 2,5/5
There it is: the original front cover in all its toilet-paper-pink glory! Perhaps the nice digipak wasn't all that necessary... Still, the thing is protected by a clear O-card. And each has its own (ugly) artwork. Nice touch. But no lyrics on the booklet? Come on! This is supposed to be a deluxe edition!
VALUE FOR MONEY (and conclusion) : 4,5/5
The very first recordings of what would become one ot the greatest rock bands of all times. A must-have for any Cure fan! But you will still need your original edition of Three imaginary boys (for the sound) and Boys Don't Cry (for "Killing an Arab") + the dots (if you want every song from this era).
