"Hot Space" kinda sux?... well, I don't think so.
Being hugely impressed by the success of "Another one bites the dust" in the charts 1980 and also influenced by Freddie's Disco Nights in Munich (as far as I know), this record is the natural follow-up to "The Game"... imho.
It surely is an acquired taste with a hell of a lot of dance, disco and funk, especially on side 1, but there is also "Back chat" with an absolute killer of a riff and an awesome axe solo from Brian kicking some serious ass.
The then very controversial "Body Language" is something like a smooth, modern remix of "Get down, make love" five years earlier from the classic "News of the World" (NotW). Go and hear.
Side two offers more of the classic Queen sound, that has always been some kind of eclectic mix of influences of all genres, be it Latin ("Las palabras de amor"... listen to "Who needs you" from NotW) or serious Hard Rock in "Put out the Fire".
And finally we have the classic "Under pressure" - ain't that one of the most unconventional No. 1's ever? It's so quirky and full of tempo changes, it's almost progressive.
Just found that quote from SOUNDS magazine, 1981: „Queen’s performance is surprisingly good, it’s Bowie and Mercury’s vocals and words that let the whole thing down.“ - dogs bark, the caravan moves on ;-)
Critics usually sux, but Queen? No. Never did. -
On my good system it sounds tinny and harsh.
On my 2nd system it sounds less harsh, but still a bit tinny.
Decent enough sound quality otherwise.
I have the SHM-CD ordered from Japan..and will report/compare when it arrives. -
This is one of the most underrated records of all time.
Great album, amazing deep cuts, excellent vinyl cut.
Best pressing of this album by far. -
