I originally bought the standard edition of 'Pure' after hearing 'Torn' at a club - I loved the absolute and totally immersive sound when I first heard it: it was awe inspiring. Previously I'd thought of Tubeway Army etc whenever I thought of Gary Numan, so I was surprised to learn that this new industrial goliath was by the same artist. I loved the album and played it over and over - but it eventually found its way to the back of the shelf over time as new and other stuff caught my ear.
I recently rediscovered the tour edition of this album, though, and I'm awe-struck all over again. My music player shuffled up 'A Prayer For The Unborn (Grayed Up Remix)' and I properly listened to the lyrics for the first time. Dark doesn't come close to describing the pain that is so evident in this track. A cursory bit of research apparently shows that Numan experienced a personal tragedy which inspired this music. If true, then the lyrics of 'A Prayer For The Unborn' are a heartbreaking testament to Numan's despair. The music is as beautiful as the lyrics are moving - the whole piece is so full of emotion that it's difficult to avoid getting caught up in it.
The album is a dark industrial masterpiece full of massive, enveloping sound that echoes like a dark church. The noise is immense, but when considered with the lyrics it's truly haunting. It's a work of real beauty - real genius.
