Edited one year agoI was 2 months into my freshman year of college when "Pretty Hate Machine" was released, and was hungry for new experiences and influences. Having been a devoted fan of electronic and synthpop music for years, I was introduced to industrial via Front 242's "Headhunter" in the summer of 1989. Needless to say, I was primed by the time PHM arrived that Fall. After reading a review, I bought this CD without having heard a single note! It was a challenging first listen, yet my impressionable musical pallette stretched and twisted to take it all in and, by the end of the album, I was absolutely hooked! I have since wavered in and out throughout Nine Inch Nails' output, but "Pretty Hate Machine" remains a pivotal and treasured masterpiece to me. It's one of those special albums that serves as a vivid time stamp on the transition from youth into adulthood, helping to open my ears and mind to new experiences, and the world as i knew it would never be the same again. It was a "perfect time and place" album for me, and I still have and love it all these years later.
I also completely agree that the original CD release is the one to get. I tried the 2010 remaster and, while I'm not as adverse to "modern" mastering as some, it was simply unlistenable. -
The original CD,cassette, vinyl and Ryko Disc vinyl are the best sounding versions of this album hands down. The dynamics and head room are all present in those releases. The 2010 Bicycle reissue on CD is mastered loud but sound is not ruined good for someone on a budget.
