Edited 4 years agoKate Bush's albums three albums during her developmental phase as a precocious, artistically aware baroque popstrel do not quite measure up to her atmospheric, technically advanced efforts of the '80s. Tackling Bush's early output is difficult to say the least - from the folk inflections, literary and mythological allusions and pervasive fascination with the natural world, such idiosyncrasies are impossible for the non-enthusiast to comprehend, or even relate spiritually to. Those who are so inclined can extend their interest to the aforementioned art rock albums, but casual fans lacking an attention span and a broad cultural knowledge should opt for "The Whole Story", which was released calculatedly in the wake of "Hounds of Love", her best-selling album to date.
"The Whole Story" is ostensibly a concise, non-chronological assembly of charting singles released between 1978 and 1986 - "Army Dreamers," "Wow," "Cloudbusting," "Running Up That Hill," "Hounds of Love," "Sat In Your Lap," and "Babooshka" - all of which demonstrate the evolving pattern she set out as a heady, magical solo star. In order to entice those who already own all the albums and singles in some form or another, an unreleased bonus "Experiment IV" and a (wholly unnecessary) new vocal version of "Wuthering Heights" are included amongst the more familiar tracks. As a single disc overview it lacks completeness, and is therefore more of an introduction to Bush's work than a thorough retrospective - especially when one considers its glaring omissions - offering a sample of her finest and most popular compositions ordered as a tasteful and versatile playlist and designed to be experienced in one sitting. It may not be the whole story as its title suggests, but it does have its charms, and you'll be hard-pressed to find another summary of Kate's early-to-mid career hits as fairly satisfying as this.
