BAP – Für Usszeschnigge!

Lyrics to "Verdamp Lang Her", arguably the band's biggest success and commercial breakthrough, were written by Wolfgang Niedecken in March 1981 escaping from Cologne Carnival to Morlitzwinden on his annual "Karnevalsflucht".
His dad had died 6 months prior, which he tried to process with this song written on Rosenmontag (Shrove Monday - the day of the big parade in Cologne, an event of joy and happiness ) finishing it the next day.
The lyrics are widely known in at least for the generation that grew up in the eighties with individual lines ("Nit resigniert, nur reichlich desillusioniert") and a sing-a-long chorus standing out though the regional "Kölsch" dialect make especially the verses very difficult to actually understand for people outside Cologne.

The first few verses reflect on Niedecken's condition after his father's death. After the chorus he addresses the
speechlessness between them towards the end and (his) regrets about it.
He later said [translated]: "Even before his death I used to run around thinking: 'How can we change this. The he was dead'" adding: "Let's not kid ourselves: The seemingly random success of 'Verdamp Lang Her' is of course [due to] the fact that everybody interprets their own story / experience into it."

Niedecken's Band BAP thought the text was too melancholy and an inclusion in their album "Für usszeschnigge!" remained in question for a long time, especially as a chorus was missing. It was guitarist Klaus 'Major' He who challenged Niedecken who recalls: "[Major says:] 'So, what do we do with this song about your father?' and started riffing the nearest possible harmonies like a lick by The Police and just repeating „Verdamp lang her, verdamp lang, verdamp lang her“. The whole band looks at each other and says ' Let's try this'. ... Imagine: The chorus comes in after the fourth verse. - Totally impossible for today's radio programming “

In an interview in 2016 Niedecken comments on the song "Et Ess Lang Her" from their album "Lebenslänglich" which explains the story behind "Verdamp Lang Her". He calls it an "apology" to his father and continues: "Als ich klein war, war ich ein absolutes Papa-Kind. Aber irgendwann, wenn man in die Pubertät kommt, geht das mit diesen Ödipus-Kämpfen los. Dann streiten sich zwei Männer um die Gunst der Mutter. Ich war damals total selbstgerecht. Mein Vater war eigentlich wehrlos, das hat mir später total leidgetan. Was sollte der arme Mann schon argumentieren? Mir wäre das natürlich nie iert, dass ich mich mit den Nazis arrangiert hätte… Ich wäre eigentlich von Anfang an ein Held gewesen und wäre hundertprozentig in den Widerstand gegangen. (lacht bitter) Aber was machst du denn als Familienvater, der seine Leute mit einem kleinen Lebensmittelgeschäft ernährt? Trittst du in die Partei ein oder nicht? Stellst du dich dagegen? Ich hatte gut reden, denn ich wuchs ja im Wirtschaftswunderland auf."

[translated:] "When I was small, I was daddy's boy. At some point, when one goes into puberty, the Oedipus battle starts. Soon two men fight over the mother's favour. I was totally self-righteous. My dad was defenseless which I felt totally sorry about later. How could that poor man have argued with me? Of course I would have never run with the Nazis... I would have been a hero from day one and ed the resistance [laughs bitterly] But what do you do as a family man who is trying to feed his people by running a small
grocery store? Do you the party or not? Do you resist? It was easy for me - because I grew up during the economic miracle [of postwar ]"

("Gönnen" is a german active verb it means the exact opposite of "to grudge" or "Schadenfreude". It means you find joy in the luck and fortune of others and you are glad for them.)
