Look, this is a pretty trippy record, field recordings and free flowing improv sax etc. But listen, ”Zombizar” is on here. This might be the single greatest pop/jazz/psycheldelic/beat jam of all time. Just get it. Even if this is the only track you end up liking on here it’s still a cheap ission for just how mindblowingly f*cking good this is. Just get it. Trust me.

Edited 3 years agoMoshi may be labelled "free" & "experimental" but by today's standards it's a very accessible etno / jazz album - not "difficult" à la Ayler or late Coltrane at all - which mixes the "in the field in Africa" feel with electric jazz à la Pharoah Sanders' "The creator has a master plan". More mellow & gentle than wild & complex all in all it's a sophisticated album where "it’s sometimes difficult to know where Africa stops and Wilen begins" as Bradford Bailey wrote.

To be honest this is not 100% my genre. Most are just too crazy and difficult for me.
But gosh this is such a varied album. It has some of those moments where you say “just stop it, it’s been enough”, but it sounds lovely and the mix of sounds and soundscapes is wonderful.
Not for everybody, I still have my doubts, but worth the check nonetheless. -

A beautiful record from a beautiful label. One of my favourite records of 2017 thus far, from one of the finest record labels in the world, circa now. This is a holy grail of sorts, sought after, cherished by all entranced by it. A perfect artefact, in every respect 10/10.

Fantastic sounds on here - jazz meets field recordings meets wicked folk. A rather expensive record but well worth it - the gatefold is packed with goodness. This might just be my favorite release of 2017.
