American alternative rock of the 90s was rarely inspired by 80s music, with the exception of the American indie one. One of the few band interested in sounds of another continent created in the previous decade was Smashing Pumpkins. Founded in Chicago in 1988, Pumpkins composed an alternative rock similar to Seattle grunge and Jane's Addiction psychedelic crossover, but with a deep fascination for English melodic research of noises. The contrast between aggressive riffs and dreamlike melodies is perfectly represented by Billy Corgan voice: gentle and delicate, but at the same time grating and hysterical. Vaguely psychedelic, Smashing Pumpkins alternates lullabies with alternative metal rage. Their debut album (produced by Butch Vig) is a great appetizer of the future of the band, in perfect equilibrium between shoegaze rock gentleness and grunge rock anger and desperation.
