As the title suggests, I'm interested in recommendations for collections/compilations of early jazz, either single artist or various artists.
I'm particularly interested in vinyl releases but by all means recommend cds. I just want to build a list of stuff to look out for that I can refer back to easily when I'm out in the wild. There are tonnes of these comps out there and the quality varies wildly. I'm well aware that there are severe limitations in audio quality, but all the same would like as good sound as possible. For example, I've read that John R. T. Davies was particularly well regarded for restoration and remastering of early jazz recordings, so have wantlisted a few things he did. I don't have the correct equipment for playing 78s, and am not particularly interested in going down that rabbit hole tbh!
Interested in Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds, Sidney Bechet, Bix Beiderbecke and the likes. -

For example, I've been looking out for a decent comp that has the original version of Duke Ellington's - Creole Love Call with Adelaide Hall on vocals. It's an all time favourite of mine, would be nice to have a reasonable sounding version on vinyl. -

What it sounds like you're interested in is the Territory Bands. There are many comps compiled from 78s under that classification. The series on Historical Records are good with killer covers https://discogs.futbolgratis.org/release/7344403-Adelaide-Hall-Hall-of-Ellington. But it looks like a later recording judging by the cover. -

Interesting, don't think I've ever heard the term Territory Bands before. Anyway, thanks, certainly some stuff worth investigating.

Here's Adelaide https://discogs.futbolgratis.org/release/7344403-Adelaide-Hall-Hall-of-Ellington. But it looks like a later recording judging by the cover.
yes, also the track length seems too long for the original version which is just over 3mins I think -

This LP Adelaide Hall - Hall Of Memories (Recordings 1927-1939)
good spot, that looks like the one, also I see the transfers/remaster is by JRT Davies, only concern perhaps is the amount of music per side, almost 25 mins, still one for the list, thanks -

I recently picked up this awesome disc in a bargain bin for $2 from the MCA "Jazz Heritage" series:
Various - Jazz Gems From Gennett-Champion
It sounds great and I looked in the liner notes to see that Kevin Gray (of Blue Note Tone Poets fame) did all the mastering and Steve Hoffman had involvement as well.
Also decent are the Milestone releases:
Jelly Roll Morton - Jelly Roll Morton 1923/24
Wish that Frog (7) put out LPs - their CDs are always very good. -

Yes, that MCA Jazz Heritage series looks like exactly what I'm after, and names like Gray and Hoffman are usually a sign of quality. I'll have a good dig through this series, thanks.
I just looked at your profile, seems like this is your area of expertise. Must check out your youtube channel :) -

Please do! I post many transfers of jazz from this early period - along with other interesting rarities from the 78 rpm era from around the world.
I'm not at the level of John R. T. Davies or other masters of the craft - but I'd like to think that I produce decent listenable transfers.
