Great photo, enjoyed trying to see who I could spot without reading the words or looking it up. Mingus and Rollins looking cool as.. and Dizzy looking goofy, also spotted Art Blakey and Monk pretty quickly. I like the symmetry of the 2 guys at the front, one with a cig in his left hand the other with a cig in his right hand! The children at the front and in the window give it a community feel too.
I have a copy of the photo with a note to me from Marian Martland framed on my wall. I interviewed her several times, along with Sonny Rollins, Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Milt Hinton and Gerry Mulligan. There's also a book out about it that features some of the outtakes before the main photo, several of which feature Willie "The Lion" Smith next to Luckey Roberts until he got tired and sat on a nearby stoop with a young pianist named Mike Lipskin, missing the chance to be in the final photo.
