Berserker is possibly the beginning of Gary Numan's great commercial crash. But it is definitely not one for the scrap heap. The album has its flaws but there is a uniqueness in it that makes it essential. 1984 should never be overlooked in Numan's library of sound.

Can anyone out there with a copy of any of the vinyl LP issues that there is actually a version of "Cold Warning" that is only 4:03? I have the U.K. Numa version, and it is the same 6:01 version as found on many of the cd reissues. There is also an extended mix of the song that was on the cassette and the initial Numa cd.

Bought it when it came out and went to the gig in 84.Was never that into it as a kid.
Played it today and really enjoyed it.Not as bad as people make it out to be.Much better than Warriors and no worse than The Fury

I recall some reviewer in Smash Hits awarding this LP 2/10 'for perseverance'.
In all honesty, it has never been one of my favourites, but I did revisit it after it was described as a 'classic' by Martin Gore (Depeche Mode). Musically Berserker and My Dying Machine stand out, but I do find the album on the whole rather 'droney', as is White Noise Live. I fail to see Gore's point of view, but the next album The Fury is a superior piece of work for me.

The 'Berserker' album is a true classic in Numan's discography, it fuses full on electronica with fretless bass and saxaphone. All songs on this album are excellent and Berserker is worthy successor to to the style Numan had developed on the previous release 'Worriors'.

Berserker, as a complete work is astounding. And held against even the best known acts of the time, this is an extremely mature album for a 24 year old to write. The title track could be released today and sound as fresh as it did then. It's a very well constructed piece that burns from the first chord, then completley slows up, expands, and then takes off again. I first heard this track in 1992 and it was the only song in a long time that actually had me smiling from ear to ear as I left my cd player on 'repeat' for nearly an hour.
An awesome, and greatly underrated album, which features other gems such as the paranoid industrial eba of My Dying Machine, and the incredible Viola of Cold Warning, just to cite a couple of great tracks.
