There have to be much better sounding masters of this album. It’s well-pressed and quiet with very good separation in the mids and highs, but as others have said, the bass is seriously lacking. No separation between basslines and bass drums, no texture on either, just a mess. Turning up the sub and/or system does nothing. Very disappointing, especially given the gut-wrenching bass on some of the recent Doggy Style remasters.

Great sound quality from this classic album, dead silent wax, and full explicit lyrics. Highly recommended.

Great sounding pressing. Mine is actually a misprint - while all sides of both discs of the album are pressed correctly with the right tracks, the labels on disc 1 show the songs for Side A on both sides of the disc. Disc 2 has Sides C and D labeled correctly. Anyone else have a misprint like this?

Recently picked this up for $24 in a record store, and after playing it, I’d call this a massive bargain. It sounds fantastic! My records are flat, super clean and quite dynamic. This freaking thumps and the mids and highs are crystal clear. The mastering sounds impressively huge. I kinda wish it had a gatefold cover, but I’m having zero sibilance or inner groove distortion issues someone previously mentioned. Recommended.

A must-have. Period. This re-issue is a great value, and plays with nearly no issues. Surface noise very minimal, and the bass is surprisingly full and rich. Had to EQ down a bit, actually. Stereo separation is fantastic and imaging puts everything right in front of you on a nice soundstage. Album sleeve/jacket is oddly roomy, no issues with both LPs in new anti-static master sleeves (which is a welcome change from too-tight jackets)

Edited 3 years agoI can't confirm, let alone add to all the positive reviews here.
First, the record is far from being 'near silent'. Its surface noises are okay and I can live with it, but 'near silent'... come on. I can still hear groove noises at almost any time if I want to (which is not the case for genuinely 'near silent' records).
Second, the disks suffer from severe inner groove distortion and very harsh 'S' louds in the vocals - tested on both midrange (Rega P6 w/ Excalibur Black cart) and highend players (Rega Planar 10 w/ Transfiguration Axia cart). Additionally, the mix seems blurred and faded.
I much prefer my (unfortunately rather worn) Back To Black EU copy (https://discogs.futbolgratis.org/de/Dr-Dre-2001/release/2955328) - even though I genuinely dislike the label and buy from them really rarely, the BTB issue sounds much, much more engaging with no inner groove distortion, a considerably larger sound stage, the mix really comes to live in this version.
The bass is also hitting a lot harder, deeper and with more texture on the BTB EU version, which also comes with more authentic, mid-range focused vocals.
This US version falls behind the EU BTB issue big time. -

Not a lot to look at, but damn, this pressing sounds great. Virtually identical to the original 1999 pressing by Aftermath, as well as the 10 year anniversary 2009 pressing. One double-sided track credit sheet, no gatefold, no additional artwork or artist testimonies, just normal, great-sounding wax. Super quiet surface noise, no pops or clicks to speak of. That's what matters the most, more than any bells and whistles ever will.
