Don't you just hate it when film credits are too small to read (will Hollywood ever change its conventions and help music fans out by showing the songs one by one and in big type, with a clear distinction between composers and performers) ànd when you end up with a soundtrack album that doesn't bother either? Because, by way of a review, I found the sources & credits info in this release severely disappointing.
And so I looked up what the original sources & dates were for the music that wasn't specially composed for this movie by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. The cd booklet doesn't mention the orginal recording or release dates, or the album on which the track first appeared. But it does say this: "This movie was my third experience with the composer Mark Mothersbaugh (...) Bob Casale, one of Mark's Devo colleagues, engineers the recording sessions (...) the operation is known as Mutato Muzika, which is I think Esperanto (...)" -- Wes Anderson
Track 02: 1967, from Nico (3) - Chelsea Girl
Track 03: 1991, from Maurice Ravel / Claude Debussy, Quatuor Ysaÿe - String Quartets ; the original release is by Quatuor Ysaÿe but the soundtrack turned it into Ysaÿe Quartet (sigh).
Track 04: 1972, from Paul Simon - Paul Simon
Track 06: 1970, from Bob Dylan - Self Portrait
Track 08: 1970, from John Lennon / The Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band
Track 09: 1970, from Emitt Rhodes - Emitt Rhodes
Track 11: 1977, from The Clash - The Clash
Track 13: 1976, from Ramones - Ramones
Track 15: 1995, from Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
Track 16: 1970, from Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
Track 18: 1965, from Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
Track 19: 1968, from The Velvet Underground - VU
Track 22: 1967, from Nico (3) - Chelsea Girl
