This sounds good to me, not as amazing as the 2022 Mellin collie reissue or the 2021 Gish US, but still great. There is some surface noise though, and Plume has the different vocal track on this pressing. Search up "plume alternate version" on youtube if you want to hear it for yourself, but I prefer the original version.

Another great Pumpkins press. Only docked a point cause it had a really bad cosmetic blemish that wouldn’t go away despite numerous cleans. Probably just debris from the pressing plant! It does not affect playback luckily!

So, apparently, the US pressings (not sure if it's the case for all 3) have the advantage in of cover (heavier jacket + colored cardboard inners) & vinyl weight (200gr for the US, 180 for the EU) BUT they potentially lose them when it comes to the pressing plants (Rainbo for the US, Optimal for the EU) which is way more critical to the music.
Mastering jobs are also different: Stan Getz II @A+R did the US ones, while Marko Kluge did the EU.
So, my question is simple: is there a clear winner here?
For those who have both pressings, did the infamous Rainbo QC ruined the US press? And, between the two, is there a better master? -
Edited one year agoThere is a different take/mix used in this 2012 reissue's version of "Plume" vs the original 1994 release. The remastered version has a completely different vocal track, seemingly for no good reason (maybe Billy preferred it but I think it's slightly inferior, the vocal sounds lazier in comparison). You can hear the difference most clearly in the line "It's so dumb/It's so down low", the inflection and melody is different. I can't tell if the instrumental track is also completely different or if it's only the vocal. Was this a mistake in which original tape was used to make the remaster? or was it the only take available? This being one of my all time favorite releases I noticed it right away in 2012 and felt this made the (otherwise stellar sounding) reissue slightly flawed.

These re-issues are a bit all over the place much like the Siamese Dream re-issues. I still don't have a listing on Discogs that I can match specifically to either vinyl. The run-outs I have for PI match this version except for Side C which is closest to the Memphis Record Pressing (5099946425416 SIDE C JP #Я4), although I think my has "#14" rather than "#Я4". Bizarre...

be warned. if you are getting the recent re-issue...(or ones still sealed for under 40 on this page). it is not the Stan Getz cut as listed on the page. the re-issue is pretty much a repress of the European version. US 2012 vs EU 2012.. aka the latest repress. the US version is much louder and crisp.. the other(EU) sounds bland. make sure you ask the seller if " A+R Dallas TX SPG II" is etched into the deadwax. if so, you got a winner!!!

Edited 2 years agoUm this sounds better than I’ve ever heard it . Unbelievable big muff power! Marsha is loud and proud, magical stratocasters and Les Paul customs galore. Incredibly loud pressing, clear and big.

Scooped it from drowned world records for $37 incl tax and shipping. Just like all the other revent pumpkins reissies, absolutely killer packaging and presentation. The music sounds great, little to no surface noise, def worth if if you can get it for under $40.
