Edited 3 months agoThis is one of the great live albums of what some call Brubeck’s “Vintage Quartet” preceding the Classic lineup. The feature is of course Desmond but Bob Bates was a damn good bassist, providing a sleek line during his feature on “Little Girl Blue” that I really can’t get enough of whenever I listen; Brubeck’s quote of “Lush Life” is equally enjoyable. I wouldn’t exactly call some of these tracks “Red Hot,” they’re mostly on the “Cool” side but there definitely is a unique vibe to these recordings at the suave Basin Street East. Too bad Columbia never placed both “Closing Time Blues” and “Taking a Chance On Love” on this album’s original release, orphan tracks from this set, because both absolutely cook and would classify as “Red Hot.” Either way, there’s some great renditions here and it remains in my regular Brubeck rotation. If you can find a clean Six-Eye, snap it up as the live sound for ‘55 is great overall. Extra points for the killer album cover by the famed Richard Avedon, one of the most distinctive of the 1950s, especially if you find one without considerable fading or ringwear. Highly recommended.
