Notes
Case bound album, inspired by the albums for 78rpm shellac records in the library of La Fabrique,
32 pages of artwork
The 11 track album on two heavyweight 12" vinyl records
Two compact discs: one with the album and one with two extra tracks
Recording tape belly band applied *
* This is a piece of a Radiohead ½ inch master tape from an actual recording session.
The tape degrades over time and becomes unplayable. We thought rather than it ending up as landfill we would cut it up and make it useful as a part of the special edition. A new life for some obsolete technology...
Each loop contains about ¾ of a second of audio - which could be from any era in the band's recording past going back to Kid A.

This release makes me so mad. The packaging is amazing, but the actual records sound like ass water. Like, they didn't think for a second "hey, this is a deluxe edition we're charging 70 dollars for that's going to be bought only by people who really love this album, maybe we should actually make it sound good?". This shit sounds like frying oil, and it's too damn bassy. No air whatsoever, and the more ambient tracks really suffer as a result. Fuck XL recordings for screwing this and all of this band's reissues up so massively.

Edited 5 months agoI guess I got lucky with my copy. My copy sounds great aside from some prominent popping towards the end of True Love Waits. My discs were filthy out of the package but a cleaning has done them good. It’s also satisfying to finally have Ill Wind and Spectre on physical media at long last! Got my copy used in very good condition from Reckless Records for 77 dollars. Absolutely worth it!

Both of my LPs are BADLY warped, but thankfully does not affect play. In fact, both discs are dead quiet and sound fantastic. I do not have any of the poor sound quality / muffled issues that others have complained about. Audio is lively and detailed, and the packaging is really nice. It is annoying that the records themselves are so warped, but I have no other complaints and am very happy with the sound.

the listing here says it's an Optimal pressing, but other are CZ (garbage) and rainbo (2x garbage). my deluxe edition sounds AWFUL. like, really, really bad. i just can't believe this is really Optimal. it sounds like a bad press. i've had really good luck with XL stuff in the past, not sure what's going on here.
agreed with the comment: poor pressing in a very nice package/ -
Edited one year agoBought this at release and man, my discs really do not sound good. I received my copy with lots of visible residue / blemishes on Side B and tons of distortion on the instrumentals of Decks Dark (my favorite song on the record). Faint but omnipresent surface noise throughout the entire first disc.
Poor pressing in an otherwise very nice package. -
I'm on my 5th copy and although some of the later ones I received cleared up nearly all of the tracks...some of the improvements were incredible....on every single copy track 1 side D skips. Its definitely not my setup as everything else plays perfect, and as soon as I get to the second track on side D it's flawless.
Anybody else had issues with track 1 Side D consistently jumping back, rendering it literally unlistenable?
Great customer service as they're sending a new copy out right away and asking no questions or return. Do feel like im getting other people's returned copies though. -
Edited one year agoSound wise, sounds like a million bucks to me. Lots of clarity, separation, presence, and very quiet. In no way "muffled", maybe I was lucky.
The book is beautiful, BUT...the size makes it a nightmare if you want to put it in an outer sleeve. The built-in inner sleeves of the book are not great, and with no outer sleeve that fits, if you put the records in nice inner sleeves, they are loose and vulnerable.
Sorry, a silly thing to be frustrated with, but I had to vent. Ideas welcome. -
The book is beautiful and leads to new insights about the album. I enjoy listening to the album while looking at the artwork and reviewing the lyrics contained in the book. Unlike the rest of the pages in the book, the lyrics are printed on textured pages made of a rubbery type of material… the background of the lyric pages seems to show early version of the lyrics, which led me to insights about why some song titles were chosen and how the song evolved. The art contained in the book also helps to convey the mood and feeling of the album. This would be an amazing coffee table book, but I keep mine stored safely on the shelf. The analog tape strip included also helped me to imagine the engineering and recording process, and is a cool souvenir. The sound of the double records is very good and overall a quality listening experience. There are still some available on the artist website as of Nov 2023.

There seems to be a lot of mixed comments regarding the sound quality of this record. I played my copy today for the first time after a surface clean only and unfortunately for me the sound quality is awful. The instrumentation sounds reasonable, not great but reasonable but Thom's voice is shockingly bad - really muffled and fuzzy, it's not clear at all. Will give the vinyl a proper, wet clean and see if it improves but initial thoughts are that I'm very, very disappointed in the sound quality. The packaging is stunning, by the way. It's just a shame that the actual records almost seem like an afterthought.
