From Steve Hoffman who remastered this release -
", this version is a very representative facsimile of what the original pristine master tape sounds like. free of treble lift and limiter artifacts. You will need to turn your stereo up a bit louder to catch the dynamics in full swing.
Since I didn't use any compression OR EQ on most of the songs, we just unhooked all of the outboard gear from the mastering console right out of the signal chain for a crystal pure sound and just let her rip.
You should be able to hear the different microphones used on Joni's vocals and the different engineering recording style on several of the songs quite clearly.
This is not a flaw, it's exciting; you get to hear the original Dolby A Joni Mitchell BLUE master tape right on your own stereo with nothing in the way. Enjoy it!" -
I did a comparison with my VG+ 71' OG and this KPG/SH version. Tough one! Both versions have their attributes. The KPG/SH is cut a little hotter, {noticeably louder than the OG] is slightly harsher in the vocals but has better instrument separation and clarity. The OG has a deeper presence in Joni's vocals and sounds more natural but it's not as open sounding as the KPG/SH. Since this recording is mostly about the songs and singing I find the OG is a little less fatiguing to listen to. On the other hand the KPG/SH is dead quiet and has a black background, while there's some crackle happening in my 50 year old + original. Like I said Tough One! Ha, can't go wrong with either version is my long winded conclusion. Such a classic record.

Edited one year agoI've listened to this album a hundred times, and this pressing is the best way that I've ever heard it. I'm looking forward to comparing it to the Mofi release, but I have a hard time believing that it will be better than this--even at less than half the price.

Nice presentation. Depth to the instrumentation. And Joni’s voice is presented well and out front. Upper mids are a little harsh for me. But it’s a good pressing.
-
I compared this pressing with the one from Joni Mitchell The Reprise Albums Box, and I still like this pressing better. It sounds more natural than the other to me.
-
In a word, stunning. I haven’t heard any other pressings but I can’t imagine anything sounding better. Incredible sound and pressing.
-
This pressing sounds absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. The details are clear and Joni sounds like she's in 3D.👍

Joni's voice on this pressing gives me goosebumps. (I can't compare to later pressings which look similar but apparently omit Steve Hoffman's initials in the deadwax, possibly indicating a different remastering.) But this one sounds amazing and well worth the it fetches right now.

We had this exact pressing at the FYE I worked at for five years and on the last day, I snagged it for the ridiculous price of $18! Phenomenal sounding pressing, the sonics are superb and it sounds as if Joni is playing right in front of you. Seek this out if you can find a deal on it.

Why are people still paying big money for this? The 2020 reissue is cut by Kevin Gray and is nearly identical in an A/B comparison. Kevin has notoriously upgraded his equipment since 2007
