Notes

The third studio album from the Minutemen.

The title refers to doing the speed limit (55 mph) on the number 10 freeway and was reaction to Sammy Hagar song, "I Can't Drive 55", which protested the federally imposed speed limit of 55 miles per hour on all U.S. highways.

The cover features Mike Watt driving his Volkswagen Beetle at exactly 55mph ("double nickels" in trucker slang) in downtown Los Angeles, headed southbound toward Interstate 10 ("The Dime" in trucker slang) and the Minutemen's hometown of San Pedro.

The original LP has 45 tracks.

On 1987 CD reissue, several original tracks were omitted due to space or licensing reasons. These were "Don't Look Now", "Mr. Robot's Holy Orders", the cover of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", the cover of Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu" and "Little Man With A Gun In His Hand".

In 1989, Double Nickels On The Dime was released on CD again, with a new mix closer to the original vinyl. With this release "Don't Look Now" and "Doctor Wu" were restored.

The description of the cover is wrong.
Watt is driving 55 "on the dime" which is slang for exactly.
He is driving on the Harbor Freeway towards San Pedro on highway 11(now the 110) not the 10.
It took more than one to get the San Pedro (hwy 11) sign in the frame.

Righto, I'm here to set the record straight on this here straight record pressing.

Jacket - Thick, solid, straight, high quality

Inner sleeves - Square antistatic poly, not cheap paper, straight.

Pressing - Flat, well centered, clean, quiet and straight.

Sound quality - Punchy, clean, open, balanced, tight, clear, surprisingly dynamic considering how much music is fit on these slabs of wax, grooves run close to labels yet sound quality doesn't suffer from Inner groove distortion.
        And straight.

I couldn't be happier with this pressing, it's straighter than straight.

Incredible sound. This flies off the turntable at breakneck speed

Id love to hear the OG press of this as I think this sounds pretty good.
The mix sounds similar to my OG 3 Way Tie for Last.
On my system and to my ears, it has a fuller, punchier sound than my old CD.
I had this cranked pretty loud and didnt notice any distortion at all.
            Pretty happy with it.

Sounds great to me. The instruments are nice and distinct. The funky bass and guitar blasts come through nicely. The 80s underground punk scene was really diverse, and this is a prime example of that creativity. Pair it with some Big Black or Minor Threat.

Anyone have the runout info? I’m wondering if this is a new cut or is it the same as the 2022 coke bottle clear version.

Found this pressing at a shop in SLO brand new. I recently got to listen to an original pressing but didn’t get to keep it, so I was over the moon to find even a reissue. It gets the job done and I’m happy to have it, however The original blows this one out of the water unfortunately. That was to be expected with tape decay and all that, but I gotta say I was a little disappointed with the pressing itself. Lots of surface noise and pops and inner groove distortion. Glad to have the album, but I say keep your eyes peeled for an OG

Nothing I can add that hasn't been said before as far as the music on this epic masterpiece goes but I will say that this is the second part of the greatest punk / indy rock 1-2 punch in recorded history, never to be beaten.

I have a Copy. Absolutely fine pressing. Wide stage, bass in evidence. All clear. Vinyls flat. My opinion Is positive. A good chance to make yours a real classic!

Bought this new pressing to replace a beat up early '00s version, but I've gotta say that one still sounds better. This new pressing sounds very compressed and muffled in comparison, like the whole thing's under a blanket. There's also some noise on all four sides. Bummer.
